Vesugen (also called Vezugen) is a tiny, lab-made chain of just three amino acids (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins) — Lysine, Glutamic acid, and Aspartic acid, so scientists nickname it "KED." It belongs to a family of very short peptides invented by Russian scientist Vladimir Khavinson and his team, who believed these mini-peptides could 'talk' to genes and help slow down aging in the blood vessels, heart, and brain (Molecules 2021). It's a completely synthetic (man-made), not a natural body hormone.
Mechanism under study
Nobody has found a specific 'lock' (receptor) on cells that this peptide plugs into — which is unusual for a drug. Instead, scientists think it sneaks inside cells and attaches itself directly to DNA, flipping certain genes on or off, kind of like nudging a light switch instead of pressing a doorbell (Molecules 2021; Bull Exp Biol Med 2021). In lab dishes with human stem cells, it boosted a growth-related gene (IGF1) several times over and tweaked genes tied to cell aging and stress (Mol Biol Rep 2020). In another lab test it helped nerve-like cells grow more branches (Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol 2019).
Human evidence summary
There's only one real human study, and it wasn't a strong one: 41 men with erectile dysfunction caused by clogged arteries were given Vesugen, and their blood flow in that area improved. But there was no comparison group getting a fake treatment (placebo), so we can't be sure the improvement wasn't just from time passing or expectation (Adv Gerontol 2014). A review paper also mentions that older adults who took it by mouth had better memory and attention, but this claim comes from a summary article, not a traceable, verifiable clinical trial (Bull Exp Biol Med 2021).
Preclinical evidence summary
Surprisingly, there is basically no animal research on Vesugen at all. The same 2021 review that discusses it actually says that testing it in animal models of Alzheimer's disease 'seems to be very important' — meaning that as of the writing of that review, it hadn't been done yet (Bull Exp Biol Med 2021). All of the supporting lab work has been done in cell dishes, not in living animals.
