Thymalin is different from the other peptides in this batch — it's not one single, defined molecule. It's a mixture of many small proteins extracted from the thymus gland (an immune organ) of baby cows, made using a mild acid process (Int J Immunopharmacol 1997; Int J Mol Sci 2022). Two of its known active ingredients are simpler peptides called Vilon and Thymogen, which scientists were able to isolate out of the Thymalin mixture (Int J Immunopharmacol 1997; Int J Mol Sci 2023).
Mechanism under study
Thymalin helps immune cells called T-cells mature and get better at recognizing threats. It changes internal cell signals and boosts certain immune messenger chemicals (Int J Immunopharmacol 1997). In human stem cells (early cells that can become many cell types), it appeared to push cells toward becoming a specific mature immune cell type (Bull Exp Biol Med 2020). Its two active components also calmed down inflammation-related chemicals in immune cells exposed to bacteria (Int J Mol Sci 2023).
Human evidence summary
Thymalin has actual human clinical data, unlike most peptides in this batch. In COVID-19 patients, adding Thymalin to standard treatment sped up improvements in inflammation markers and immune cell counts (Stem Cell Rev Rep 2021). In a larger study comparing standard care, a drug called tocilizumab, and Thymalin in severe COVID-19 patients, the Thymalin group had a notably lower death rate — though there's a confusing inconsistency between different parts of that same published paper (one part says 20.6%, another part of the same paper says 16.2%), which makes it hard to fully trust the exact numbers (Adv Gerontol 2022). Also importantly, none of these studies randomly assigned patients or hid who got which treatment, which are important scientific safeguards that were missing here.
