HMG (human menopausal gonadotropin), sold under the brand MENOPUR, isn't actually one single peptide — it's a purified mix of hormones extracted from the urine of women who have gone through menopause. Since their ovaries have stopped working, these women's bodies produce very high levels of two fertility hormones (FSH and LH), which get collected and purified into a standardized medicine (MENOPUR label).
Mechanism under study
Picture your ovaries as a factory that needs two different signals to build and release an egg. HMG delivers both: the FSH part tells egg-containing follicles to grow, and the LH-like part helps prepare the egg for release. It takes about 1 to 3 weeks of injections to get follicles to grow properly, but a separate shot (usually HCG) is still needed afterward to actually trigger the egg's release (MENOPUR label).
Human evidence summary
HMG has solid backing from real clinical trials for helping women grow eggs during fertility treatment, with pregnancy rates similar to a newer lab-made version (recombinant FSH), even though it tends to produce slightly fewer eggs (Deeks, Clin Drug Investig 2018). It also seemed to cause a gentler ovarian response with a lower chance of overstimulation compared to the lab-made alternative. There isn't strong evidence for using it outside of fertility treatment.
