Glutathione is a tiny, naturally occurring molecule made of just 3 amino acids (protein building blocks) that your own cells make constantly — it's often called your body's "master antioxidant." It's not something invented in a lab from scratch; rather, medical and cosmetic versions are made to be identical to what your body already produces, then given as a pill, IV drip, or injection (Forman et al., Mol Aspects Med 2009).

Mechanism under study

Think of glutathione as your body's built-in cleanup crew. It grabs harmful, unstable molecules (called oxidants) floating around your cells and neutralizes them before they can cause damage, kind of like a sponge soaking up a spill before it stains the carpet. It also helps escort out toxins and certain drugs from your system, and it's a way your cells deliver the amino acid cysteine where it's needed (Forman et al.; Aebi et al.).

Human evidence summary

A well-run 6-month study gave 54 people either 250 mg or 1,000 mg of oral glutathione daily and found the higher dose raised glutathione levels in blood cells by roughly 30-35%, and in cheek cells by a striking 260%; it also boosted certain immune cells' ability to fight off threats (Richie et al., Eur J Nutr 2015). But confusingly, a separate study giving people a single 3-gram oral dose found no meaningful rise in blood glutathione levels at all (Witschi et al., Eur J Clin Pharmacol 1992) — suggesting that a single dose behaves very differently from taking it consistently over months. As for the popular skin-lightening use given through an IV, a careful review of the science found there simply are no published studies proving it works or is safe for that specific purpose (Davids et al.).
