Survodutide (lab code BI 456906) is a lab-made peptide being developed by the drug company Boehringer Ingelheim. It's built with a fat molecule attached to help it stay active in the body for about a week, and scientists removed a specific weak point in its structure that would otherwise let the body break it down too fast (Guide to Pharmacology — survodutide).
Mechanism under study
Survodutide flips two switches at once instead of one. It copies GLP-1 (the same "I'm full" hormone semaglutide copies) to reduce appetite and slow digestion, but it also copies a second hormone called glucagon, which is meant to help the body burn more fat, especially stored fat in the liver (Sanyal et al., NEJM 2024).
Human evidence summary
In a 46-week study of 386 people with obesity, survodutide led to weight loss ranging from about 6% at the lowest dose to about 15% at the highest dose, compared to under 3% for placebo — but only about 60% of people finished the whole study, meaning a lot of people dropped out (le Roux et al., Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol 2024). In a separate 48-week study of 293 people with liver disease (MASH), close to half or more of people on survodutide saw their liver disease improve without getting worse, compared to only 14% on placebo — a strong result (Sanyal, NEJM 2024).
Preclinical evidence summary
The existing research profile does not include separate animal-study details for survodutide — like several other newer weight-loss peptides, most of the published, gathered evidence for this compound comes directly from its human trials.
