MGF stands for Mechano Growth Factor. It's a piece of a hormone your muscles naturally produce, related to IGF-1, called IGF-1Ec. When your muscle gets mechanically stressed (like during exercise), your body sometimes edits the instructions for making IGF-1 in a special way that creates this variant. The version sold as a research peptide is usually a synthetic 24-amino-acid piece called the 'E-domain,' not the full natural hormone (Kandalla et al.).

Mechanism under study

The idea is that when your muscle gets damaged from training, it releases MGF as a kind of local alarm signal that wakes up dormant 'muscle stem cells' (called satellite cells), telling them to multiply so they can help repair and grow the muscle later. Unlike regular IGF-1, MGF seems to work through some other, not-yet-identified pathway rather than the main IGF-1 docking station on cells (Goldspink review).

Human evidence summary

There are no human clinical trials of synthetic MGF at all. Everything claimed about its effects on people is based on personal anecdotes, not real studies.

Preclinical evidence summary

In lab dish experiments, synthetic MGF helped young muscle stem cells multiply for longer and delayed them from settling down into mature muscle — but interestingly, it had no effect at all on stem cells taken from old, aged muscle (Kandalla et al.). However, this is where it gets complicated: two separate pharmaceutical company labs tried to repeat these experiments and completely failed. Using the same or even higher concentrations, they found synthetic MGF did nothing to human or mouse muscle cells in the lab, while real IGF-1 worked fine in the same tests. Those scientists concluded there's real doubt about whether MGF does anything at all biologically (Fornaro et al.). So the animal/cell evidence for MGF is genuinely disputed among scientists, not just limited.
