Melanotan I (also called MT-I or afamelanotide, brand name SCENESSE) is a lab-made copy of a hormone your body already makes called alpha-MSH, which tells your skin to produce more pigment (the brown-black coloring called melanin). It's a chain of 13 amino acids (tiny building blocks that link together to form proteins and peptides) put together in a lab, not something found naturally in this exact form (FDA SCENESSE label). Interesting side note: even though the source profile files it under 'Mitochondrial/Antioxidant' peptides (compounds that protect the tiny power plants inside your cells), that's actually a mismatch — MT-I doesn't work on mitochondria at all. It works on skin pigment cells instead.
Mechanism under study
Think of MT-I like a key that fits a lock on your skin's pigment-making cells (called melanocytes). Once it turns that lock, the cells start pumping out more brown pigment (melanin), giving you a deeper tan — even without much sun.
