Livagen is a lab-made, four-amino-acid peptide (called KEDA) built to target the liver. It's the "short peptide" version of an older extract-based product, meaning scientists tried to isolate the specific small molecule they believed was doing the useful work in that older, cruder liver extract (Adv Gerontol 2020; Georgian Med News 2014).
Mechanism under study
Livagen appears to loosen up tightly-packed DNA inside older cells — imagine DNA normally coiled up like a tightly wound ball of yarn; Livagen seems to help unwind parts of that ball so genes that had gone quiet with age can switch back on (Bull Exp Biol Med 2004; Georgian Med News 2023). Researchers believe this might help liver cells work better and could support the immune system and the body's antioxidant defenses too (Adv Gerontol 2020), but the actual proof of a working liver benefit in real bodies is thin.
Human evidence summary
The "human" data isn't from people taking the peptide — it's from human blood cells taken out of the body and studied in a dish. These lab studies used blood cells from elderly people, breast cancer patients, people with hardened arteries, and people with a heart muscle condition. Across these studies, Livagen appeared to reduce DNA damage markers and improve some chromosome measurements (Georgian Med News 2017; 2014a; 2014b). No study has actually given Livagen to a person and tracked whether they got healthier.
Preclinical evidence summary
Claims that Livagen helps protect the liver in animal models of liver scarring and hepatitis appear only as summary statements in a review article, not as data from an actual traceable animal experiment that could be checked (Adv Gerontol 2020). So real, verifiable animal research is essentially missing.
