Cardiogen is a tiny, lab-made chain of four amino acids (amino acids are the small building blocks that make up proteins) called AEDR. It isn't found floating around naturally in your blood — scientists in Russia built it as part of a family of "bioregulator" peptides, each one designed to target a specific organ. Cardiogen was designed with the heart in mind (Molecules 2021).

Mechanism under study

Nobody has found a "lock" (receptor) on cells that this peptide fits into like a key, which is how most drugs work. Instead, in lab dishes, Cardiogen seems to stick onto DNA and onto proteins called histones (the spools that DNA wraps around inside a cell). The idea is that by attaching to these spots, it might change which genes get turned on or off (Biochemistry (Mosc) 2013). Scientists also think it might be able to sneak into cells using special doorways called transporters (Biomolecules 2023). But the idea that this actually does something useful inside a real, living heart is still just a guess — nobody has proven that chain of events happens in a real body.

Human evidence summary

There are no human studies of Cardiogen at all — none identified in the scientific literature.

Preclinical evidence summary

The one animal-related experiment used pieces of heart tissue (not whole living animals) taken from young and old rats and grown in a dish. A very small amount of Cardiogen made those tissue pieces grow more, in both the young and old samples (Adv Gerontol 2006). That's essentially the entire animal evidence base — one tissue-culture experiment.
