AHK-Cu is a tiny lab-made peptide made of just three amino acids — alanine, histidine, and lysine — attached to a copper atom. Because it's so similar to a related peptide called GHK-Cu, some people online call it its "cousin." It doesn't occur naturally in this exact combination; it was created as a copper-carrying tool for cosmetic and hair research.

Mechanism under study

Think of copper as a helpful nutrient your cells need in small amounts, but too much loose copper floating around can actually be harmful. AHK-Cu works like a tiny, safe delivery truck — it grabs onto copper and carries it gently into cells without letting it cause damage. Once delivered, this copper seems to help hair follicle cells survive longer and multiply, rather than dying off, which is the theory behind why it might help hair grow (Pyo et al., Arch Pharm Res 2007).

Human evidence summary

None exist. According to the existing research profile, no human clinical trials of AHK-Cu have ever been done. Everything claimed about it helping human hair growth is either a guess based on the related peptide GHK-Cu, or comes from anecdotes from people selling or using the product — not real science on people.

Preclinical evidence summary

There isn't traditional animal research either — the actual lab study used isolated human hair follicles taken from real people but tested outside the body (called "ex vivo," meaning outside a living organism) along with cells grown in dishes. At very small concentrations, AHK-Cu made hair follicles grow longer and increased the number of cells in the hair-growing part of the follicle. However, one part of the expected effect — protecting cells from dying — wasn't found to be statistically meaningful, meaning it might have happened by chance (PMID 17703734).
