It was created by scientists as a way to block a specific enzyme in the body called NNMT, which is involved in how cells store and burn fat (Neelakantan et al. 2018). It doesn't exist naturally in the body; it's a purpose-built research tool.
Mechanism under study
Your fat cells have an enzyme (a protein that speeds up chemical reactions) called NNMT that, when overactive, seems to slow down fat burning and lower a cell's energy currency called NAD+. 5-Amino-1MQ blocks this enzyme, which in lab studies raised NAD+ levels in cells and seemed to help the body burn fat rather than store it — like taking the parking brake off a car engine.
Human evidence summary
None. No human studies of any kind were found for 5-Amino-1MQ. Any claims about it helping people lose fat that you might see on sales websites are not backed up by any real clinical trial in humans.
Preclinical evidence summary
In mice that were fed a high-fat diet to make them obese, giving them 5-Amino-1MQ by injection for 11 days led to about 5% body weight loss, compared to a slight weight gain in mice given a placebo. Their fat tissue shrank by about 35%, their fat cells got about 30% smaller, and their cholesterol dropped by about 30% — all without the mice eating less food, and without any signs of toxicity (Neelakantan et al. 2018). A later study found that combining this NNMT-blocking approach with a low-fat diet helped normalize body fat and changed the mix of gut bacteria in mice (Sci Rep 2022).
